Being without a job can be scary. Whether we like it or not, money makes the world go round. We’ve all heard people say things like “money isn’t everything”, right? But I’d be willing to guess that those people have never had to live without money.
I’m not going to sit here and say that I’ve ever been completely without any form of income (thankfully.) Having said that, for quite a while we lived on one income due to me being unable to find work. Eventually, I decided enough was enough and I made it my mission to figure out how to make money without a job.
I didn’t even care if I was only making a few dollars a day – I just wanted to find a way to contribute financially. And I knew that in today’s digital age, making money without working a traditional job had to be doable.
I now make a full-time income from home, but it didn’t start like that. I started small, earning a few dollars here and a few dollars there. It didn’t take long for me to be making enough money to cover our gas for the month. Then I was making enough money (completely online, without a job) to pay for our groceries. And it just grew from there.
So I’m here to tell you – if you’re wondering if it’s truly possible to make money without a job, the answer is a resounding yes. I’ve been doing it for years now! Keep reading below to find out how to make money without a job.
Making Money Without Working: 12 Ways to Make Money Without a Job
Online surveys were one of my first forays into making money online when I didn’t have a job.
I actually signed up for a TON of online survey companies, and a lot of them were incredibly scammy. I found myself spending hours taking boring, repetitive surveys only to earn 500 points. And the only thing I could exchange those points for was a magazine subscription.
Magazine subscriptions are fun, but they’re not going to pay the bills. I needed survey companies that were going to pay in cash, prepaid VISA cards, or gift cards to places I already shopped at (like Target, Amazon, etc.)
After lots of trial and error, I found some great, legitimate survey companies that I can truly recommend:
…are a few of them.
Click here to read the full list of survey companies I recommend that pay cash or prepaid VISA cards.
If you love dogs, then you can make up to $1000/month or more pet sitting or dog walking with Rover.
Rover is the nations largest pet sitting and dog walking network, with 140,000 pet sitters and dog walkers. It’s free to create a profile on Rover, and as a member of the Rover network, you’ll get 80% of your earnings (the other 20% goes towards paying for Rover’s customer support, payment processing, promotion, safety coverage, etc.)
Considering that ever 4 seconds a pet owner books a service through Rover, it’s fair to say that you could really make some good money without having to do more than care for adorable dogs (which, if you’re a dog lover, you’d probably do for free anyway, so what better than to get paid for it!)
Mystery shopping has been around forever – it’s been one of the most popular ways to make money without a job for decades.
One of the best mystery shopping companies that I’ve come across is Bestmark. Bestmark aren’t some flash in the pan, scammy mystery shopping company – they’re one of the premier mystery shopping companies and work with some of the top companies around the world, including Fortune 500 and Global 500 companies.
If you’re nervous about the idea of being a mystery shopper, there’s really no need to be. All you have to do is go to the establishment and act like a normal shopper. Depending on your assignment, you might be getting an oil change on your vehicle, ordering a meal at a restaurant or finding out information about opening a new bank account.
If you’re ever required to make a small purchase, you’ll be fully reimbursed by Bestmark. Once you’ve completed your assignment, you’ll come home, log into your Bestmark account and report back on your experience.
The payment rate varies depending on location and assignment, but you’re looking at around $20-$25 on average.
If you have a knack for writing, then it’s possible to make very good money as a freelance writer. In fact, freelance writing was one of the first ways that I made money online, along with online surveys.
Here’s a cool story regarding freelance writing: years ago, I was sitting in San Antonio airport waiting for my delayed flight. I knew I’d be there for a while, so I decided to crank up my laptop and start writing. I wrote an entire article while I was sitting there, and emailed it to the editor of an online/print publication.
I boarded my flight back to Nashville, and by the time I’d arrived home, I had a reply from the editor saying he’d like to run my article. That was actually the moment I realized that I can truly succeed at making money without a job.
If you’re interested in freelance writing, here are some of the steps that I took:
- Write constantly. The more you write, the better you’ll get.
- Enroll in a freelance writing course – this is the one I took.
- If you’re planning to submit articles to online publications (which is the easiest/best way to make money fast) then buy a copy of the Yahoo! Style Guide.
- If you need money fast (and you don’t really care how much) then consider joining Blogmutt. I will warn you, they are a content mill and they pay peanuts (around $7/article last time I checked.) But I used to be a member and I found it was a good way to build up my experience and confidence. Just don’t get stuck in the trap of writing for peanuts – you deserve WAY more than $7/article.
Start a Blog
However, I don’t want you to be under the illusion that running a successful blog and making money from it is easy – it’s actually a lot of work.
Having said that, starting a blog is one of the best, and most financially rewarding things I’ve ever done. The money I make from blogging has eclipsed anything I’ve ever made while working in a 9-5 job, and it allows me the freedom to work from anywhere in the world.
If blogging sounds like something that interests you, check out my free step-by-step tutorial to get started.
Sell Your Stuff
I’m willing to bet that if you really took an inventory of everything you own, you can probably come up with a fair amount of stuff that you don’t really need, and sell it for at least a couple hundred dollars.
I actually do this regularly. (It helps that I have a 2-year-old who grows out of things overnight.)
Every few months, I’ll go through the entire house setting aside clothes that no longer fit, toys that aren’t played with anymore, DVD’s that we no longer watch, baby items that aren’t age appropriate anymore, etc.
I’ll sort them into three piles – sell, donate and throw away.
Get Cash Back on Your Groceries
One of my favorite easy ways to earn money is by claiming cash back on my groceries with a free app called Ibotta.
Ibotta is easy to use – just choose the cashback offers you’d like to claim, scan the corresponding barcodes then snap a pic of your receipt and upload it directly through the app. 24 hours later your cash back will appear in your account.
Once you reach $20, you can request payment via Paypal cash, a gift card or Venmo.
Join Ibotta here and you’ll get a $10 signup bonus after you claim your first cash back offer.
Join Ebates and Get $10
Ebates is an online cash back site that gives you a percentage of cash back for your online purchases. And just for signing up here, they’ll give you an additional $10 gift card after you make your first cashback purchase.
They’ve partnered with thousands of retailers so you’re definitely going to find plenty of places that you already shop at, and you’ll earn cash just for doing what you already do.
Rent Out Your Space With Airbnb
If you have an extra room in your house and you live in a desirable location, then you can make good money hosting guests with Airbnb.
There are people who make thousands of dollars per month through Airbnb. A lot of what you can make will depend on where you live, the type of host you are, and the type of space you’re offering.
If you don’t have a spare room, you can even get creative. I know of someone who rented a 1970’s Airstream that someone had in their backyard!
Start Your Own Online Business
In today’s digital age, there are hundreds of profitable online businesses that you can launch, with the potential to earn six figures per year and up.
Launching your own business might sound daunting and complicated, but it’s actually not as difficult as you might think. There are lots of excellent online courses from people who’ve been there, done that and decided they want to teach others to do the same.
Here are some ideas:
- Bookkeeping can be a very lucrative online business, because all businesses are required to keep accurate financial records, but most business owners don’t have the time or desire to do it themselves. To learn more about starting your own bookkeeping business, check out this free class that’ll teach you more.
- Spend a lot of time on Facebook? Why not make some money while you’re doing it by learning how to run Facebook ads for small businesses. This can be a highly profitable side hustle or a lucrative full time business, depending on how much time you want to dedicate to it. Facebook Side Hustle will teach you exactly how to get started.
- Virtual assisting is a rapidly growing field, with excellent income potential. As a virtual assistant, you might be doing anything from creating graphics for Pinterest and social media, managing an email inbox, sending out affiliate payments and more. If this sounds interesting to you, check out 30 Days or Less to Virtual Assistant Success.
Teach English Online
If you like kids and think that you’d enjoy helping Chinese kids learn English, then there are a couple of excellent companies that hire native English speakers, and they pay up to $26/hr.
- If you have a Bachelor’s degree and some experience working with children, then check out VIPKID. They were ranked the #1 work from home company by Forbes in 2017, and they pay up to $22/hr.
- If you don’t have a Bachelors degree and experience with kids, then MagicEars is another company that hires online English tutors, and doesn’t have as stringent requirements as VIPKID. They pay up to $26/hr. Check out MagicEars here.
Create an Online Course
If you’re skilled and knowledgeable in a certain area, then I’m willing to bet there are people who’d be interesting in learning from you.
Creating an online course is relatively easy to do, especially when you utilize a platform like Udemy.
Head on over to Udemy and browse through the thousands of online courses that people are offering, then get started on creating and uploading your own. There are people who make multiple six figures a year from creating online courses.
