Making Money Without Working – 17 Ways to Make Money Without a Job
Money makes the world go round, and while money isn’t everything, having extra money sure makes things a lot easier. Making money without working sounds like a dream, but in today’s digital age, it’s more than possible.
Even a few extra dollars here and there is pretty awesome when you consider that you’re making money without a job! So without further ado, here are 17 ways to make money without working a traditional job.
1. Download This App That Pays You Just For Having It
This app pays you just for having it on your phone. You literally do nothing and they’ll pay you $50 per year per device (you can install it on multiple devices!)
If you’re looking for a way to make money without working, then that’s basically the definition of passive income. Click here to learn more.
2. Make Quick Money Taking Online Surveys
Taking online surveys is one of the best ways to make money without working.
But one of the problems with online surveys is that, unfortunately, there are lots of scammy survey sites out there. I have two top recommendations for survey sites – the first one is Vindale Research.
Vindale Research has lots of good surveys and they pay in cash via PayPal or check.
Top Survey Site – Vindale Research
One of my favorite features of Vindale Research is their Daily Studies.
Daily Studies are surveys that change throughout the day. You can participate in the daily studies 10 times per day, and they will pay you every time you complete the daily study.
Right now in my dashboard, there are 3 daily studies – one paying $1.25 per study, the other two paying $0.75. If I take each of the studies the maximum 10 times, I’ll make $27.50.
As you can see from the screenshot below, my current balance with Vindale Research is $120, which isn’t bad at all, especially when you consider that I’m making money without working a normal job.
Top Survey Site – Survey Junkie
The other top survey site I recommend is Survey Junkie.
Survey Junkie has lots of surveys, with some of them paying as high as $50. Survey Junkie pays cash via PayPal and has a TrustPilot Rating of 8.9/10 which is the highest of any survey company.
3. Make Money With This Money-Saving Bot
You’ve heard the phrase, “a penny saved is a penny earned” right?
It dawned on me a while ago the fastest way to give myself a pay rise was to save money. If you can cut your expenses by $50/month, that’s essentially the same as making an extra $50/month!
There’s an awesome free money-saving bot called Trim that will help you save money by negotiating your monthly bills like cable and internet, so you pay a lower amount each month.
Trim also keeps track of your monthly subscriptions (which can all add up fast without you even noticing) and it lets you cancel them with the click of a button if you choose to.
Trim has saved it’s users of $8,000,000 and it’s completely FREE to use.
4. Make Money Scanning Barcodes
Shopkick is a free app that pays you to scan barcodes and enter stores – it’s like a treasure hunt but you get paid for it!
For each item you scan in a store, you’ll earn what’s called “kicks.” Each kick on Shopkick is worth around $0.004 cents which doesn’t sound like much, but sometimes you can get 350 kicks just for entering a store, which works out to $0.80.
Add to that all the kicks you earn for scanning barcodes and you could make a few dollars just by entering some stores and scanning some barcodes. Plus Shopkick is fun and it’s free, so why not?
Pro tip – sometimes you can even earn kicks just by driving past the entrance to the store. I used to do this after work with my local Target! Download the Shopkick app for free here and get a bonus 250 kicks.
5. Make Money in the Stock Market ($5 Bonus)
Investing is one of the best ways to make money without actually working – instead, you’re making your money work for you.
I used to think that investing required a lot of money, but that’s actually incorrect. You can even invest your spare change with Acorns.
Acorns is an app that invests your spare change for you by rounding up your purchase to the next dollar. For example, if you buy a coffee for $3.70, Acorns will round the purchase up to $4 and use that $0.30 to invest in ETF’s for you. Additionally, you can make $5 for every person you refer to the app.
*Limited time offer – for the month of November, Acorns has an awesome promotion. If you refer 11 people to Acorns by sharing your referral link, Acorns will give you a bonus $1100. Join here and earn your referral bonus!
6. Make Money For Buying Your Groceries ($10 Sign Up Bonus)
One of my favorite easy ways to earn money is by claiming cash back on my groceries with a free app called Ibotta.
Ibotta is easy to use – just choose the cashback offers you’d like to claim, scan the corresponding barcodes then snap a pic of your receipt and upload it directly through the app. 24 hours later your cash back will appear in your account.
Once you reach $20, you can request payment via Paypal cash, a gift card or Venmo.
Join Ibotta here and you’ll get a $10 signup bonus after you claim your first cash back offer.
7. Make Money With Your Own Online Boutique (for only $29)
If you love shopping for cute, quality clothes on a budget, then why not make money doing just that?
Hello Pink is an online boutique that has THE cutest clothes at insanely low prices (I’m talking $9 for a pair of leggings and $12-$16 for adorable graphic tees.)
And the best part about Hello Pink is that they are committed to providing a legitimate opportunity for women (and men if you want!) to make an income online, without having to spend thousands on inventory like some other companies (that shall remain unnamed.)
So how do you become a stylist and earn money with Hello Pink?
Well, the first thing you need to do is click here to go to the Hello Pink sign up page.
Then, follow the prompts to sign up (it takes no more than 2 minutes) and you’ll get a free pair of leggings, too!
You’ll then get access to your back-end, where you can start sharing your special link. You’ll receive a 20% commission on all products that customers purchase using your link. You also receive a 25% discount on your own orders, along with your own personalized website, weekly trainings, etc.
$29 is an insanely low price to start your own business, and I love that Hello Pink has made the barrier to entry so low.
8. Make Money From Your Online Shopping ($10 Signup Bonus)
Ebates is an online cash back site that gives you a percentage of cash back for your online purchases. And just for signing up here, they’ll give you an additional $10 gift card after you make your first cashback purchase.
They’ve partnered with thousands of retailers so you’re definitely going to find plenty of places that you already shop at, and you’ll earn cash just for doing what you already do.
9. Make Money By Blogging
Starting a blog is one of the best, and most financially rewarding things I’ve ever done. The money I make from blogging has eclipsed anything I’ve ever made while working in a 9-5 job, and it allows me the freedom to work from anywhere in the world.
10. Make Money With Your Own Online Business
In today’s digital age, there are hundreds of profitable online businesses that you can launch, with the potential to earn six figures per year and up.
Launching your own business might sound daunting and complicated, but it’s actually not as difficult as you might think. There are lots of excellent online courses from people who’ve been there, done that and decided they want to teach others to do the same.
Here are some ideas:
Bookkeeping can be a very lucrative online business, because all businesses are required to keep accurate financial records, but most business owners don’t have the time or desire to do it themselves. To learn more about starting your own bookkeeping business, check out the free class below.
Facebook Ads Manager
Spend a lot of time on Facebook? Why not make some money while you’re doing it by learning how to run Facebook ads for small businesses. This can be a highly profitable side hustle or a lucrative full time business, depending on how much time you want to dedicate to it. Facebook Side Hustle is a incredibly popular and informative course that’ll teach you everything you need to know.
Virtual assisting is a rapidly growing field, with excellent income potential. As a virtual assistant, you might be doing anything from creating graphics for Pinterest and social media, managing an email inbox, sending out affiliate payments and more. If this sounds interesting to you, check out 30 Days or Less to Virtual Assistant Success.
11. Make Money Pet Sitting
If you love dogs, then you can make up to $1000/month or more pet sitting or dog walking with Rover.
Rover is the nations largest pet sitting and dog walking network, with 140,000 pet sitters and dog walkers. It’s free to create a profile on Rover, and as a member of the Rover network, you’ll get 80% of your earnings (the other 20% goes towards paying for Rover’s customer support, payment processing, promotion, safety coverage, etc.)
Considering that every 4 seconds a pet owner books a service through Rover, it’s fair to say that you could really make some good money without having to do more than care for adorable dogs (which, if you’re a dog lover, you’d probably do for free anyway, so what better than to get paid for it!)
12. Make Money Teaching English Online
If you like kids and think that you’d enjoy helping Chinese kids learn English, then you should check out Magic Ears.
MagicEars hires native English speakers, provide the entire curriculum so you don’t have plan out all your lessons, and they pay up to $26/hr.
I know quite a few people who teach English online to Chinese kids, and they all absolutely love it.
13. Make Money Mystery Shopping
Mystery shopping has been around forever – it’s been one of the most popular ways to make money without a job for decades.
One of the best mystery shopping companies that I’ve come across is Bestmark. Bestmark aren’t some flash in the pan, scammy mystery shopping company – they’re one of the premier mystery shopping companies and work with some of the top companies around the world, including Fortune 500 and Global 500 companies.
If you’re nervous about the idea of being a mystery shopper, there’s really no need to be. When you’re a mystery shopper with Bestmark, all you have to do is go to the establishment and act like a normal shopper. Depending on your assignment, you might be getting an oil change on your vehicle, ordering a meal at a restaurant or finding out information about opening a new bank account.
If you’re ever required to make a small purchase, you’ll be fully reimbursed by Bestmark. Once you’ve completed your assignment, you’ll come home, log into your Bestmark account and report back on your experience.
The payment rate varies depending on location and assignment, but you’re looking at around $20-$25 on average.
14. Make Money Freelance Writing
If you have a knack for writing, then it’s possible to make very good money as a freelance writer. In fact, freelance writing was one of the first ways that I made money online, along with online surveys.
If you’re interested in freelance writing, here are some of the steps that I took:
- Write constantly. The more you write, the better you’ll get.
- Enroll in a freelance writing course – this is the one I took.
- If you’re planning to submit articles to online publications (which is the easiest/best way to make money fast) then buy a copy of the Yahoo! Style Guide.
- If you need money fast (and you don’t really care how much) then consider joining Blogmutt. I will warn you, they are a content mill and they pay peanuts (around $7/article last time I checked.) But I used to be a member and I found it was a good way to build up my experience and confidence. Just don’t get stuck in the trap of writing for peanuts – you deserve WAY more than $7/article.
15. Make Money By Selling Your Stuff
I’m willing to bet that if you really took an inventory of everything you own, you can probably come up with a fair amount of stuff that you don’t really need, and sell it for at least a couple hundred dollars.
I actually do this regularly. (It helps that I have a 2-year-old who grows out of things overnight.)
Every few months, I’ll go through the entire house setting aside clothes that no longer fit, toys that aren’t played with anymore, DVD’s that we no longer watch, baby items that aren’t age appropriate anymore, etc.
I’ll sort them into three piles – sell, donate and throw away.
16. Make Money by Renting Out a Room in Your House
If you have an extra room in your house and you live in a desirable location, then you can make good money hosting guests with Airbnb.
There are people who make thousands of dollars per month through Airbnb. A lot of what you can make will depend on where you live, the type of host you are, and the type of space you’re offering.
If you don’t have a spare room, you can even get creative. I know of someone who rented a 1970’s Airstream that someone had in their backyard!
17. Make Money By Creating an Online Course
If you’re skilled and knowledgeable in a certain area, then I’m willing to bet there are people who’d be interesting in learning from you.
Creating an online course is relatively easy to do, especially when you utilize a platform like Udemy.
Head on over to Udemy and browse through the thousands of online courses that people are offering, then get started on creating and uploading your own. There are people who make multiple six figures a year from creating online courses.
