The base chakra, also known as the “root chakra” is the first chakra, located at the base of your spine. In Sanksrit, the base chakra is referred to as “Muladhara” which means “root support.”
Our base chakra functions just like the roots of a tree – it works to energetically ground us, and is directly connected to our health and sense of security.
Imbalances in the base chakra can increase your susceptibility to illness, cause lethargy, encourage anti-social behavior and cause you to have feelings of insecurity. Additionally, an imbalanced base chakra may cause anxiety, weight loss or weight gain, overeating and hoarding.
Because the base chakra is the first chakra and the root of the entire chakra system, it’s imperative that our base chakra is balanced. Just like the roots of a tree, if our base chakra is imbalanced, our entire chakra system will be imbalanced.

Essential Oils for the Base Chakra
Woody, fresh oils can help to stimulate the base chakra if it is blocked and under-active, whereas antiseptic oils can help to balance the base chakra if it’s over-active.
Here are 8 essential oils for the base chakra, that will help to clear imbalances:
8. Clary Sage
In addition, Lavender is a must-have essential oil, and it can be useful for balancing all of the chakras.
It’s important to note that you must use undiluted, pure essential oils with no nasty chemicals, fillers or additives. Cheap, synthetic “fragrance” oils may be tempting to buy purely because of the low cost, but they have absolutely no benefits when it comes to balancing the chakras (or anything else, for that matter.)
However, you don’t need to spend large sums of money to get pure, undiluted essential oils. The most cost-effective and pure essential oils I’ve found are produced by Plant Therapy, who have partnered with famed aromatherapist Robert Tisserand (who wouldn’t put his name to a company that wasn’t completely above board.)
How to Use Essential Oils to Balance The Base Chakra
An excellent way to use essential oils for the base chakra is to use a roller bottle to roll a small amount directly onto the base of the spine, where the base chakra is roughly located.
Place a few drops of your chosen essential oil along with a carrier oil (almond oil is a good one) into a glass roller bottle like this, and gently massage into your lower back, near the base of the spine.
Additionally, diffusing essential oils can be an effective way to balance your base chakra.
