Can you believe it’s almost Thanksgiving? I can’t! For a lot of people, after enjoying a relaxing Thanksgiving dinner with family the next order of business is hitting the Black Friday sales. There’s no doubt that some good deals can be found on Black Friday, but unfortunately, there can be a tendency to go overboard, which leads to people swiping their credit card with wild abandon and ending up with a scary looking balance that they’ll be paying off for a long time (with interest!) To avoid finding yourself in a similar situation, here are 5 things to remember before you hit the Black Friday sales.
5 Things to Remember Before You Hit the Black Friday Sales
1) Just because something is a bargain, it doesn’t mean you need it
Oftentimes, we can get caught up in the rush and excitement of the Black Friday sales, and end up purchases items that we didn’t even need. You may see a pair of boots that are marked down from $200 to $50 – great saving, right? Sure, but only if you need a new pair of boots. Otherwise, you’ve just replaced that $50 that you could have invested, saved, or used to pay off some debt, with something you didn’t even need.
2) Stores use some sneaky tactics to lure you in
You know those advertisements you see for a huge, flat-screen TV for just $120? While it’s illegal for a store to advertise a deal that doesn’t exist, those amazing offers are usually available in extremely limited quantities. The reason why stores offer a few items at rock-bottom prices is to lure you in and get you to buy other things that aren’t such a great deal. Don’t fall for it!
3) Make sure you create a budget and stick to it
Before you hit the Black Friday sales, figure out exactly how much money you have to spend, and don’t go over that amount – there’s no point going into debt just to get a good deal.
4) You can shop online
The Black Friday sales are not just limited to bricks and mortar stores. Many online retailers also participate in the Black Friday sales, and often offer free shipping. 5) You don’t have to go to the Black Friday sales
What?! What kind of a tip is that? Well, it’s true. In the 5 years that I have been living in the United States, do you want to know how many times I’ve been to the Black Friday sales? Once. And that was by accident. It was the evening of my first Thanksgiving, and my husband and I decided we wanted to put up a Christmas tree. Only problem was, we didn’t own one, so we decided to drive to Hobby Lobby to look for a tree and some ornaments. When we arrived, everything was 50% off (great!) but the place was PACKED. It wasn’t until we left that my husband realized we had stumbled into the Black Friday sales (I had never even heard of them!) Beyond that one time, I have never gone to the Black Friday sales – I don’t have any desire to battle the crowds, and I truly believe that amazing deals can be found at any time of year!
