Thanks in part to the constant junk food advertisements that are shoved in our faces, it’s a rare type of person who is never tempted to grab a quick burger and fries for dinner, a donut and frappe for breakfast or a candy bar at the grocery store.
Add to this the fast-food restaurants that are on every street corner, seeing your friends posting their calorie-laden meals on social media and those “BOGO” junk food coupons that seem to arrive in the mailbox every day and it’s easy to see why we’re left wondering can I stop eating so much junk food?!
Thankfully, the answer is yes! There are a number of things you can do to not only resist the temptation, but to banish junk food cravings for good.
How To Stop Eating So Much Junk Food
1. Make a List and Stick To It
This might sound obvious, but it’s one of the best ways to drastically reduce the temptation to eat junk food – don’t buy it in the first place.
If you know that there’s a tub of ice-cream in the freezer or a candy bar sitting in the pantry, it’s only going to increase the temptation to eat it. It’s almost like it’s sitting there just calling your name…
Before you go food shopping, make a list of exactly what you need. Make sure you’ve eaten a full, nutritious meal before you shop. When you grocery shop on an empty stomach you’re much more likely to buy unhealthy food that you’ll find yourself regretting later.

2. Tell Your Friends and Family
Or better yet, get them to join you! Telling your family and friends your plans to quit eating junk food is incredibly important, particularly if you regularly eat out with friends or if you’re family are big junk food eaters.
It’s human nature to want to fit in with the crowd, which is part of the reason why you’re more likely to order a greasy pizza for dinner if you’re friends are doing it too.
Let everyone know that you’re on a mission to eliminate junk food from your diet and suggest a healthy restaurant alternative. An even better option is to invite friends around for dinner at your house where you can prepare a healthy, delicious meal for just a few dollars per person.
Try to get your family on board with healthy eating which will further help to eliminate your temptation.
3. Eat Less Junk Food
Sounds simple, right? That’s because it is. Believe it or not, the less you eat junk food, the less you’ll want it.
Granted, those initial first stages can be difficult to get through. At the beginning, you might even find that your junk food cravings increase. But give it some time.
Don’t give into the cravings and instead, fuel your body with nutritious food. Eventually, you’ll notice your cravings have drastically decreased and you may even feel queasy at the mere thought of junk food!
4. Knowledge is Power
One of my favorite ways to help eliminate the temptation to eat something junky is to do some quick research on the ingredients. When you learn that the food dye in your favorite candy bar is linked to cancer and banned in Europe then it may cause you to reconsider how much you “need” to eat it.
5. Meal Plan
You’ve probably heard the phrase, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”
This is true for healthy eating, too. When it comes to dinnertime and you haven’t had the time to prepare a healthy meal, the temptation to just grab something quick from the drive through or order a pizza delivery increases drastically.
Meal planning can help eliminate this mad rush at the end of the day. Spend a few hours each week preparing some healthy meals, portion them out into meal prep containers like these ones and place them in the refrigerator or freezer.
6. Utilize a Meal Delivery Service
If you’re not into meal planning, a great alternative is to utilize a healthy meal delivery service.
Freshly is a meal delivery service that offers chef prepared meals delivered directly to your door. All of their meals are gluten-free, contain no refined sugars, are packed with protein and contain all natural ingredients.
If you’re constantly on-the-go, Freshly is a great way to ensure you’re not giving into junk food purely out of convenience.
So in answer to the question, “Can I stop eating so much junk food?” – yes, you can. A little forward planning, education and rallying the support of friends and family will go a long with in reducing your junk food intake!
